So, where is the subject of this anomaly?

The English county of Monmouthshire was largely subsumed in 1974 by the Welsh county of Gwent. Click here to see a 1939 map of Monmouthshire. Note the border in red, clearly showing the county as being wholly within England.

However, English Democrats intend only that part of the pre-1974 Monmouthshire should revert to England should a majority of its citizens wish, not those areas of Gwent forming part of Wales prior to 1974.

According to some politicians and commentators, John Bartholomew got it wrong in his 1887 "Gazetteer of the British Isles", which described Monmouthshire as follows:

"Monmouthshire, maritime co., in West of England, bounded North by Herefordshire and Brecknockshire, East. by Gloucestershire, South by the Bristol Channel, and West by Glamorgan; greatest length, N. to S., 32 miles; greatest breadth, E. to W., 27 miles; area, 370,350 ac.; pop. 211,267. On the coast-line (22 m.) the only indentation is that formed by the mouth of the Usk......
